I always felt you don’t need to get that emotionally attached to the patient in order to be a good nurse. You can live your life separate from your job. That’s not what I told my aunties boss who hired me. Nepotism is great if it works in your favour and it worked in mine just peachy.
I started my nurses training at the hospital my auntie had just retired 2 months previous from. Everyone still remembered her and remembered me visiting her on occasion. I was made to by my dad. All my family were very close and liked to support each other. My feelings were different. My feelings were that she's at work and it seemed extremely unprofessional to have me, the niece, hanging around there like a lost puppy. But, I was always welcomed. If I arrived and my aunt was tending to a patient. I would go hang out in the staff room where I was fed and fawned over. That's where I met him. He was one of the hospital's Surgeons. I could tell he liked me straight away. He was 20 years older than me but that didn’t matter. He was the real reason I went to see Aunt Sophie but her and my dad didn’t know that. Best those things be kept to yourself. What dad wants to know about men you fuck anyway? Even if they have medical degrees and are highly paid. My auntie was kept in the dark too regarding me and the surgeon's trysts. He worked at other hospitals and private clinics too but his main job was at our hospital. I quite liked him working elsewhere because it gave us a chance to miss each other and I looked forward to showing him exactly how much I missed him before, during and after his shifts.
Word got out about me and Connor. It always does in workplaces. You just can’t keep a secret for that long and it’s not like we were trying to but that period when no one knows is yummy as fuck. When my family found out they started inviting him over for Sunday Roast and because they knew I had to let my friends know. My mum was such a control freak she even went to the hospital and got his number from a colleague. Can you believe it? Isn’t that illegal? To give an employee's personal contact details over to a strange woman? When parents spot a potential catch they start acting insane. I’m lucky that Connor was happy to be invited and wanted to meet my friends and family. At least he already knew my aunt so he wasn’t too nervous. The only thing he didn’t want me to discuss was his and now my, private clients, which I was cool with. I don’t think that would make for a good dinner table conversation anyways.
